Published in Germany. Bobby Sands, the imprisoned IRA hunger striker, died on May 5, 1981, and this painting was done the same day. Coe explains "His spirit is rising from the dead, leaving us the only thing he has left to give, his name. His mother, who supports his beliefs and courage, watches him die. The child in front holds a burning flag." Coe cites Einstein: Nationalism is a childhood disease one grows out of like measles. Coe writes across the painting in German, with red ink, paraphrasing Margaret Thatcher: "A murder is a murder is a murder" and interprets that as a confession, the prime minister blaming himself for Sands' death. – Louise Kollenbaum writing in Mother Jones, August 1983, p. 30-31
